BCCI Announces Indian Squad For Asia Cup 2023; Iyer & Rahul In, Chahal Out Again

Shreyas Iyer and KL Rahul have been named to India’s squad for the forthcoming Asia Cup in Sri Lanka. Both hitters were out for an extended amount of time due to long-term ailments. However, with the World Cup in less than two months, India has received a major middle-order boost.

Ajit Agarkar, Chairman of the Indian Senior Men’s Selection Committee, verified that Iyer had restored full fitness. Rahul, on the other hand, is suffering from a niggle unconnected to his long-term injury and may miss a game or two in the Asia Cup, according to Agarkar. As a result, the selectors have chosen Sanju Samson as the squad’s backup.

Tilak Varma, who impressed in his first international appearance in the West Indies, has been called up for his first ODI. Suryakumar Yadav has retained his spot in the 17-man squad despite being under pressure in the 50-over format. Hardik Pandya, the T20I captain, is still the 50-over vice-captain.

Jasprit Bumrah, who made his long-awaited return in Ireland, will lead the pace attack, which also includes Mohammed Shami, Mohammed Siraj, Prasidh Krishna, and bowling allrounder Shardul Thakur. Yuzvendra Chahal has been left out of the spin department, with Kuldeep Yadav named as the primary spinner alongside allrounders Ravindra Jadeja and Axar Patel.

In response to Chahal’s absence, skipper Rohit Sharma emphasized the necessity of having players in the squad who can bat at No.8 or No.9, an area where India falls short in white-ball cricket. “We had a deep discussion about an offspinner and a legspinner as well,” Rohit remarked after the roster was announced. “However, as you can see, it all comes down to batting options at Nos. 8 and 9.” We needed someone who could bat there.

Axar had a successful year this year, excelling in white-ball cricket… With him there, we have the option of first having that left-hander who can go up and play the spinners, and then he creates that batting depth for us. We also discussed Ashwin and Washington. As you can see, even Chahal was unable to participate because we are limited to 17 players.”

India’s campaign kicks off against Pakistan on September 2 in Pallekele, followed by a match against Nepal on September 4 prior of the Super Fours stage.
