Elon Musk unveiled his latest startup, xAI, in a tweet on Wednesday, with the goal of “understanding reality.”
Musk, whose companies include Twitter, Tesla, and SpaceX, did not provide any additional information or explanations. According to the company’s website, its mission is “to understand the true nature of the universe.”
The website’s main page says little about what the organisation will perform, although it does provide the history of the 12 team members.

Initial personnel includes DeepMind, OpenAI, Google Research, and Microsoft Research veterans. “Collectively, we contributed some of the most widely used methods in the field, particularly the Adam optimizer, Batch Normalisation, Layer Normalisation, and the discovery of adversarial examples,” according to the company’s website. “We have worked on and led the development of some of the largest breakthroughs in the field, including AlphaStar, AlphaCode, Inception, Minerva, GPT-3.5, and GPT-4.”
The team is being advised by Dan Hendrycks, the director of the Centre for AI Safety. xAI is a separate organisation from Musk’s larger X Corp, but it has stated that it will collaborate closely with Twitter, Tesla, and “other companies to make progress towards our mission.”
