Elon Musk and Bernard Arnault, the world’s richest and second-richest people, had lunch in Paris on Friday at a fancy hotel ahead of a technology conference held by an Arnault-owned company, where Musk is expected to speak.
The Tesla CEO and Twitter owner has a net worth of $236.9 billion, according to Forbes’ Real-Time Billionaires List, while the Louis Vitton Founder-CEO has a net value of $233.4 billion. The Bloomberg Billionaires Index, on the other hand, pegs their wealth at $233 billion and $202 billion, respectively, the highest on their list.
Over the last few months, the two have traded the top rank, with Musk retaking Arnault on May 31st.
According to Bloomberg, they met at Cheval Blanc, a premium hotel brand owned by the Louis Vitton company. Arnault, 74, was accompanied by his sons Antoine and Alexandre, while Musk, 51, was accompanied by his mother, Maye Musk.
While the actual aim of the meeting was not revealed, the Louis Vitton CEO, who is French, told a news channel ahead of the lunch that the South African-born US entrepreneur is a ‘great entrepreneur’ and that they know one other.

During his visit, he also met with French President Emmanuel Macron to discuss the possibility of establishing a Tesla factory in the country. Macron captioned a snap of their meeting, ‘Let’s work together!’ #ChooseFrance.’
