NBA Draft

What is NBA Draft?

The NBA Draft is an annual event in which the league’s franchises (now 30) draught players who are qualified and want to play in the league to their clubs. The players are mostly college basketball players, but overseas players may be selected if they are eligible.

NBA Draft Eligibility Criteria

The following are the eligibility requirements: All collegiate athletes who have finished their four years of college are automatically eligible; however, students must declare their eligibility by foregoing the remainder of their college career. International players are automatically eligible if they are 22 years old. If they are under the age of 18, they must declare their eligibility.

NBA Draft

The NBA Draft is often held in the second half of June, just a few days after the NBA Finals conclude. Since 1989, the Draft has been divided into two rounds, with a total of 60 players available for selection (30 in each round). Until 2006, high school athletes may be drafted into the league, but that is no longer the case. Every player who wishes to be selected into the league without having played in college is now eligible one year after graduating from high school or must be at least 19 years old as at the end of the calendar year of the Draft.

NBA Draft Lottery

The Draft Lottery determines the order of the Draft, particularly the top 14 picks in each round. This event, usually held in the second or third week of May, brings together non-playoff teams to compete in a slate-lottery-style process to select the first three picks in the Draft. The league currently employs “a lottery-style ping-pong ball machine with 14 balls numbered 1-14, and 1,000 four-digit combinations are assigned to the 14 lottery teams.” Until 2018, the weakest team earned 250 combinations, the second-worst team received 199, and so on.

From 2019 onwards, the NBA set the total number of selections received by each of the league’s three worst-performing clubs at 140, with the fourth-worst team receiving 125. The goal of the move was to decrease the allure of groups tanking throughout a season in order to improve their chances of earning the No. 1 overall pick.

After determining the order and teams for the first three picks, the remaining teams are sorted in reverse order based on their previous regular season record.
